New quilt!

In our last quilt group's exhibition, everyone had to make a 80/80cm quilt inspired by a picture. Here's the photo I chose. The quilt is named "Argousier" (Buckhorn)

Lors de la dernière exposition de notre groupe de patchwork on devait faire un quilt de 80/80cm en s'inspirant d'une photo. Voici l'image que j'ai choisie. Le quilt s'appelle "Argousier".

Firstly I chose the fabrics in the colours of the picture.

Tout d'abord j'ai choisi les tissus dans les couleurs de la photo.

Then I thought about how to bring some orange in a group of green fabrics. I decided to make mini triangles.

Ensuite j'ai réfléchi à comment apporter un peu d'orange dans un groupe de tissus verts. J'ai décidé de faire des mini triangles.

I always start by pinning a black thread on my pining wall to define the size of the quilt.

I lay my orange triangle groups inside the square and start to fill the voids with green fabrics.

Je commence toujours par épingler un fil noir sur mon tableau d'affichage pour délimiter la taille du quilt.

Je dispose mes groupes de triangles oranges à l'intérieur du carré et je commence à remplir les vides avec des tissus verts.

Little by little, the quilt is constructed. I would call that right angle improv piecing. Indeed, I sew groups, somehow at random, trying to reach a right angle "block" each time, with the help of a ruler. At one point the surface is covered. All blocks can be sewn together.

Petit à petit, le quilt se construit. J'appellerais ça du patchwork improvisé à angle droit. En effet, je couds des groupes un peu au hasard, en essayant d'obtenir à chaque fois des angles droits avec l'aide d'une règle. A un certain point la surface est couverte et je peux coudre tous les blocs ensemble.

Kawandi?

Thanks to a friend, our quilt group learned how to make "kawandi". 

This textile tradition comes from the Siddi people, of African origin, in India from slave trade or emigration. There's a lot to read about the people, the quilts and the traditions. I just took the technique, which makes it so easy to take one's work along where ever we go.

Grâce à une amie, notre groupe de patchwork s'est essayé au "kawandi". 

Cette tradition textile vient du peuple Siddi, d'origine africaine, arrivés en Inde suite au trafic d'esclaves ou de l'immigration. Il y a beaucoup à lire et à apprendre à propos des gens, des quilts et des traditions. Quant à moi j'ai juste pris la technique, ce qui rend les ouvrages si pratiques à prendre avec soi où que l'on aille.

You can take a background fabric, a VERY thin batting and you start from the outer edge towards the center. Lay squares or rectangles of fabrics and as you go. Hand stitch with fine cotton.

The technique is quite addictive, as it is all made by hand, and one doesn't have to obsess on small regular stitches. 

On prend un tissu de fond, une ouatine TRES fine, et on commence depuis le bord extérieur en direction du centre.  On pose des carrés ou rectangles de tissu au fur et à mesure et on les coud à la main avec du coton tout fin.

Cette technique est addictive, comme elle est à la main et qu'on n'a pas besoin d'être obsédé par des points petits et réguliers.

So nice to choose a few scraps and play with colours and designs...

Si agréable de choisir quelques restes et de jouer avec les couleurs et les dessins...
