Throwback Thursday, looking back at early quilts…

This quilt was one of a series of quilts I made using fused appliquéd rectangles... I made several quilts on a white and black background but for this one I chose a beautiful batik in grey shades.
There are two different color gradations in the quilt. One in the upper rectangles, going from pinks to yellow and turquoise, and one from hell grey to brown and rust in the ground rectangles.

I planned the quilt as a whole, but on four different panels, that I worked individually. I then stitched them together when they were finished. I did that because I machine embroidered a blanket stitch around each rectangle and I needed to turn around my work all the time, making it difficult with a larger project.

I always use commercial fabrics in my work, to answer a question I'm frequently asked. I find dyeing fabric very annoying and I'm not a fan!!

Hand embroidery from Kutch India

The following embroideries are all made by hand by the different ethnic groups in Kutch, Gujarat, India.

Soof by Shoda Jajput

These embroideries are made from the back. The embroidereres count the thread from the back and they give their emboideries a weaving look.

Boutis blouse for baby

New grand daughter is just the right size to wear the beautiful blouse given by a friend of mine to her older sister. It's all hand made in the technique of Provence boutis, a technique where you first quilt together two fine fabrics with so many tiny stitches. You then make tiny holes in the back to insert batting in different parts of the design.

This need hours and hours of patience... Something I could never do, but so beautiful...
