The making of a new quilt

Maryandpatch The making of a new quilt

I get a lot of questions on how I make a quilt and where I find inspiration. Here are some steps in making a improv quilt.

I have the vague idea of making something in caramel tones, but don't know yet with which color accent... I start from there...

I like to mark the final size of the quilt I want to make with pins and a black thread on my pinning board. I't very helpful...

I start playing with fabrics and free hand cut and sewn pieces...

It makes a lovely stitch, similar to hand quilting.

Fragments 5, Light and Dark Art Quilt, final version

Fragments 5, Maryline Collioud-Robert, art quilt

During the first part of the confinement, my mind was not free enough to create a brand new art quilt. So I dug into my scraps, half finished quilts and projects in limbo. I decided to make this light and dark piece, after having played with the blocks for several weeks. You can read about it here, where I "made" 12 different quilts with my 121 blocks. I finally made up my mind and chose this version.

Throwback Thursday, looking back at early quilts…

This quilt was one of a series of quilts I made using fused appliquéd rectangles... I made several quilts on a white and black background but for this one I chose a beautiful batik in grey shades.
There are two different color gradations in the quilt. One in the upper rectangles, going from pinks to yellow and turquoise, and one from hell grey to brown and rust in the ground rectangles.

I planned the quilt as a whole, but on four different panels, that I worked individually. I then stitched them together when they were finished. I did that because I machine embroidered a blanket stitch around each rectangle and I needed to turn around my work all the time, making it difficult with a larger project.

I always use commercial fabrics in my work, to answer a question I'm frequently asked. I find dyeing fabric very annoying and I'm not a fan!!

Quilt National '17

In one month Quilt National opens its doors for the 20th time! I was so happy to be selected to this famous show!! Unfortunately, I won't be able to go to the opening, (regrets, regrets...) but I'll await the beautiful catalogue and pictures of the show with impatience!

Now it's time to tell you about the quilt that was selected.
I was inspired by the theme of memory and memory loss again (see here for a quilt on the same theme selected to Quilt Visions San Diego). I collected all remains of try outs, left over blocks, unfinished projects, etc. that I kept in a box. In many cases, I couldn't even remember what they were or what they were intended at!...
I made a huge crazy top with all the scraps.

Then I covered the patchwork with a semi-transparent fabric, and made holes to reveal the patchwork top underneath.
The quilt is called "Trous de mémoire" which in French means "Holes of memory" or memory gaps.
Machine pieced, machine reverse appliquéd and quilted.
