Binding, a small trick

Here's a very small, but useful trick on how to easily bind a quilt. 
Always start in the middle of one side of the quilt, never in a corner. It will be much easier. Once you have sewn all four angles, you have to sew the two ends together. There are different ways to do it. Here's how I do it.

Voici un truc, modeste, mais efficace pour poser facilement un petit bord à un quilt. 
Toujours commencer au milieu d'un côté et non pas dans un coin. Une fois que vous avez fait les quatres coins, il faut coudre les deux extrémités du bord ensemble. Il y a plusieurs façons de le faire. Voici comment je procède.

First I place both ends touching together, folded. 

Tout d'abord je place les deux bouts pour qu'ils se touchent, pliés. 

I mark the fold with the nails, or with a pencil. 

Je marque bien le pli avec l'ongle ou avec un crayon.

And now, the trick: I pinch the quilt in two, where the binding's missing, and pin the fold. It will give me room and ease to sew both ends together. 

Enfin, le truc. Je pince le quilt en deux, là ou le bord manque, et épinglez le pli. Cela me donne de la place et de la facilité pour coudre ces deux bouts.

Once both ends are sewn, I take the pin that holds the quilt folded away and test if the binding has the correct tension. I can eventually adjust it. I cut the excess fabric.

Une fois que les extrémités sont cousues, j'enlève l'épingle qui tient le quilt plié et je vérifie que le bord a la bonne tension. J'ajuste si nécessaire. Je coupe l'excédent de tissu.

 I sew the last segment and I turn the biais over.

Je couds le dernier segment et je retourne le biais.

The baby quilt is completed.

Le quilt pour bébé est terminé.

How to make a tea towel using scraps of quilt fabric

Make a lovely tea towel in less than an hour, using scraps of fabrics.

Réalisez un joli essuie-main en moins d'une heure, en utilisant des restes.

Look through your stack of fabrics to find one that would be suitable for a tea towel (or a hand towel if the fabric is heavier). Gather some left over fabric stripes, or cut some if necessary, 4cm (1,5 inch) wide.

Chercher dans vos restes de tissus pour trouver un tissu qui conviendrait pour un torchon (ou un essuie-main si le tissu est un peu plus épais). Rassemblez quelques restes de bandes ou coupez-en quelques unes si nécessaire,  4cm (1,5 inch) de large.

Sew the stripes to obtain a long stripe and pin it to the towel. Sew at walking foot width.
Don't sew all the way to the end, leave a little space, as large as your walking foot.

Cousez les restes de bandes pour obtenir une longue bande et épinglez la sur le linge. Cousez à la largeur du pied de biche. Ne cousez pas jusqu'au bout, laissez un espace, de la largeur de votre pied de biche.

Pull your stripe to the right, making a diagonal fold.

Tirez votre bande sur la droite, effectuant un pli diagonal.

Then bring your stripe to the left, making a vertical fold. Start pinning again, until you reach the next corner.

Ensuite rabattez votre bande sur la gauche, en faisant un pli vertical. Epinglez à nouveau la bande jusqu'au coin suivant.

Again, stop a little bit before the end, and fold the corner again.

De nouveau, arrêtez-vous avant la fin et pliez à nouveau le coin.

Once you have finished all four corners, it's time to make the ends meet.

Une fois que vous avez fini les quatre coins, c'est le moment de rejoindre les deux bouts.

Fold both ends in place.

Pliez les deux extrémités en place.

You can mark the fold with a pencil. Pin both ends together, and sew.

Vous pouvez marquer le pli avec un crayon. Epinglez les deux bandes et cousez.

Finish the sewing.

Terminez la couture.

Fold the binding on the other side, carefully pinning.

Repliez la bande de l'autre côté, en épinglant soigneusement.

Don't forget to slide something to hang the towel under the binding.

N'oubliez pas de glisser une suspente sous le bord.

Sew all around the towel. 
It's finished, with perfect corners.

Coudre tout le tour. 
C'est fini, avec des coins parfaits.

How to hang a potholder

Here is how to easily make a loop to hang your potholder.

Voici comment faire facilement une boucle pour suspendre votre manique.

Start on one side, at the corner. Sew at pressing foot width. Stop at one pressing foot width from the end. Back stitch.

Commencez sur un côté, dans le coin. Coudre à la largeur du pied de biche, en s'arrêtant à une largeur de pied de biche de la fin. Faire quelques points arrière.

Turn the stripe to the right, folding it at a diagonal at the corner.

Tournez la bande sur la droite, en la pliant en diagonale au coin.

Bring the stripe to the left, pin and sew, stopping before the end. Repeat at the two following corners.

Amenez la bande sur la gauche, épingler, coudre, en s'arrêtant avant la fin. Répéter sur les deux coins suivants.

Before you sew the last corner, fold the stripe over, and pin it in place, just as it will be when finished.

Avant de coudre le dernier coin, pliez la bande et épinglez-la en place, comme elle le sera quand tout sera fini.

Sew the stripe to the end and back stitch.

Coudre la bande jusqu'au bout et faire des points arrière.

Pin everything in place, and sew only the "ribbon".

Epinglez le tout et ne coudre que le "ruban".

Slide the ribbon below the stripe.

Glisser le ruban sous la bande.

Pin everything and sew.

Epinglez le tout et coudre à 1 mm du bord de la bande.
