Indigo workshop

I've received news about an incredible workshop near Budapest. Hear it from Zsuzanna, the owner of Indigo Peacocks:

It is our first collaboration with the Museum of Blue Dyeing in Papa, Hungary. The Hungarian indigo culture is very unique in many aspects, as the heritage of indigo culture of Central Europe is completely different to the rest of the world.

The full inclusive three day workshop will cover the full process of printing (with the lovely wooden and brass printing blocks) , the dyeing, and demonstration of positive printing plus the making of the wooden printing blocks with brass sheets and nails.

The latest deadline for bookings is the 15th of July, and that is really should be the latest as the workshop is on from the 4rd of August until the 6th. Arrivals will happen on the 3rd and travelling back to home on the 7th. Everyone need to arrange their own flights to Liszt Ferenc Airport in Budapest, and I will meet everyone there and will drive them to Papa. 

We organised everything, from transport (from Budapest to Papa and back) the accommodation in the city of Papa (in a lovely hotel 200m away from the museum/workshop) and the viewing of the exhibition by John Gillow (Textiles of the Islamic World, published in April 2013)and Catherine Legrand (Indigo: The Color that Changed the World ,published in febr. 2013)  which is present at the Museum.

 It is such a lovely setting and the museum is full of beautiful indigo textiles.

Unfortunately, I can't make it to Budapest on these dates, but maybe you can?

I'm so sorry to miss the exhibition by John Gillow and Catherine Legrand, writers of some of my favorite textile books!!

Indigo again!...

At last, the book about Indigo, I was talking to you about in this post, just came out in English. A real masterpiece, this book takes you around the world and tells you about all the regional traditions pertaining to indigo. It is illustrated with gorgeous photography.

Indigo Week, Day 3

I've been working on a quilt for a workshop I'll give at Tomorrow's Quilts in June. It's a variation of Hunter Star, and I called it Winter Star. I know, in my area we are now only dreaming of Spring, but I thought that in order to have a quilt ready for next winter, we should better start now! And it will be refreshing to quilt it this summer! 

It will be a lot larger, and I don't know yet how I'll quilt it.

Je suis en train de travailler sur un quilt pour un cours que je vais donner en juin chez Tomorrow's Quilts. C'est une variation du motif Hunter Star, que j'ai appelé Etoile d'hiver. Je sais, chez nous on ne rêve que de printemps, mais je me suis dit que pour avoir un quilt d'hiver en hiver, il fallait commencer le bien avant! Et ce sera rafraichissant de le quilter cet été! Le quilt deviendra bien plus grand, et je ne sais pas encore comment je vais le quilter.

Indigo Week, Day 2

Look at the great book I got for Christmas! Indigo, by Catherine Legrand. It's been first published in French, but will be published in English next April, under the title "Indigo, the color that changed the world". 

It's a fantastic trip across the world, in all the areas where indigo is used to dye fabric in blue. The color is called Indigo, but doesn't always come from the same plant, as I learned in the book. I was also very impressed by how many times a fabric is soaked in its bath. It has to be taken out and shaken, then hung, to start the slow chemical transformation due to oxygen. 

The different ways of doing and the traditions are explained in detail, and the pictures are gorgeous.

Catherine Legrand has published two books already, both great successes among textile lovers, Textiles a World Tour and Carnet d'inspirations textiles.

Regardez le livre extraordinaire que j'ai reçu pour Noël! Indigo : Périple bleu d'une créatrice textile, de Catherine Legrand. 

C'est un fantastique voyage à travers le monde, dans toutes les régions qui utilisent de l'indigo pour teindre les tissus en bleu. La couleur est toujours nommée indigo, mais le produit actif ne vient pas toujours de la même plante, comme je l'ai appris dans le livre. J'ai aussi été  impressionnée par le nombre de fois qu'une toile doit être trempée dans le bain colorant. Il faut sortir le tissu et le secouer, puis le suspendre pour amorcer la lente transformation chimique à l'aide de l'oxygène.

Les différentes manières de faire et les traditions sont expliquées en détail, et les photos sont magnifiques.

Catherine Legrand a aussi publié deux autres livres, les deux fort appréciés des amoureux du textile, Textiles & vêtements du monde : Carnets de voyage d'une styliste et Carnet d'inspirations textiles.
