Mary & Patch: Pauline Burbidge

A great pleasure of The Festival of Quilts in Birmingham is seeing Pauline Burbidge again, always smiling and happy among her marvelous creations, this year a collection of small machine drawn black and white sketches.
Pauline is going to have a large personal exhibit next year at the Festival, so don't miss it and plan a visit to Birmingham!
I met Pauline about 20 years ago, when we were teaching at a well known quilt seminar called Nordkirchen, in Germany. It was my first workshop in a foreign country, and it was Pauline's last, because she had decided to spent all her time working on her art.
I was mentioning a technical problem one evening, as I was looking for a way to appliqué pieces on a patchwork surface, and she mentioned that she was using Vliesofix herself (which I had never heard of, not knowing much about anything at the time!) and it was a revelation!! So, at the time, I made my next quilt using Vliesofix (double side fusing material) and called it "Pétales pour Pauline", so starting a whole series of quilts whose titles only had "P"!

Un des grands plaisirs du Festival of Quilts à Birmingham, c'est que j'y retrouve Pauline Burbidge, toujours souriante et joyeuse parmi ses merveilleuses créations, cette année une collection de petites esquisses à la machine, en noir et blanc.

Pauline aura une grande exposition personnelle l'année prochaine au Festival, alors ne la manquez pas et prévoyez une visite à Birmingham!

J'ai fait la connaissance de Pauline il y a 20 ans, quand nous enseignions dans une célèbre réunion de patch qui s'appelait Nordkirchen, en Allemagne. C'était mon premier séminaire à l'étranger et c'était son dernier, car elle avait décidé de se consacrer entièrement à son art.

Je parlais d'un problème technique un soir, car je cherchais comment appliquer des pièces sur une surface en patchwork, et elle a mentionné qu'elle utilisait pour ses appliqués du Vliesofix, (dont je n'avais jamais entendu parlé, car je ne connaissais rien à rien à l'époque!) et cela a été une révélation. Alors, à ce moment-là, j'ai fait le quilt suivant en utilisant du Vliesofix (voile de colle thermocollant) et je l'ai appelé "Pétales pour Pauline", commençant ainsi une série de quilts qui ont tous eu des titres en "P"!
