Throwback Thursday, looking back at early quilts…

©Maryline Collioud-Robert, Contradiction, 2002

I made this quilt in 2002. It was created for one of our quilt guild exhibition. We had to find inspiration in a picture and make a quilt.  The picture I chose, which was exhibited under the quilt, was a spiral staircase.
I remember that life was a bit complicated for me at the time, and I think the agitated surface reflects that turmoil.
I especially liked (and still do!) the border, with I made by cutting left over blocks and appliquéing them on a new surface.

To make this quilt, I used Vliesofix (fusing material) and I secured the appliquéd pieces with a zigzag stitch. It was the first and only time that I used true zigzag in my quilts. I usually use a blanket stitch as shown in the examples below:

The quilt was supposed to be a first in a series about desert, but I never had time to develop it! New ideas and new quilts kept popping in my head and I followed other paths!...

You should go on their website and look around. You can also search the collection and discover old and modern quilts. There are treasures to be found, for sure!!!
Here are 3 examples found in the collection dating from around 1890, so modern and with such a graphic impact!

The quilts are kept in drawers or loosely folded in boxes. They are regularly folded in a different way by volunteers.
Here's an article on how the quilts are protected from insects.

Throwback Thursday, looking back at early quilts…

Here's a quilt I made 25 years ago... I started by painting a very large piece of commercial black and whit fabric, making a corner black, a corner blue and a corner white. I then cut a large square hole in the middle and use that part to make fused appliqué on the patchwork.

I always liked this quilt, and I have over my dining table. Unfortunately the colors are fading!...

Throwback Thursday, looking back at early quilts

Looking back at early quilts... Nice souvenirs, especially of the passion and impatience I had then in making quilts. It just burned me! I still love to make quilts more than anything else, but I can measure  the difference of mood. I'm so much more detached, and much quieter...
That quilt now lives in Tokyo. Still one of my favorite quilts...

Cela me brûlait littéralement!

I found some old pictures I took while making that quilt.
Sorting the fabrics for days before beginning to sew...

Making the blocks in a string quilt technique on a very fine foundation fabric...

Cutting the "petals" in fabric and Vliesofix...

Fusing the petals and free hand embroidering them one by one, creating a gradation...
