Kaarina Kaikkonen

What an incredible surprise it was to discover the monumental installation of Finnish artist Kaarina Kaikkonen, while visiting the Textile Museum in Prato, Italy.

Kaarina Kaikkonen is well known for her incredible installations, hanging hundred of shirts or men's costumes. It was so impressive!!

Kaarina Kaikkonen est bien connue pour ses incroyables installations, suspendant des centaines de chemises ou des costumes d'hommes. C'était vraiment impressionnant!

When we left Prato, and drove by the outside of the city walls, we discovered that the installation was hanging on the other side of the wall as well, with shirts in a slightly darker tone. The installation is like a gigantic skirt, just laid on the wall.

Quand nous avons quitté Prato, nous avons longé les murs extérieurs de la ville et quelle ne fut pas notre surprise de découvrir que l'installation pendait également de l'autre côté du mur, avec des chemises dans des tons un peu plus foncés. L'installation est une sorte de jupe gigantesque, juste posée sur le mur.

I really hope you ran there, as suggested in last week's post, and that you are ready to run again! This is Colossal has done it again, and is showing an incredible installation which should appeal to quilters and to everybody! Beili Liu sews pieces of white fabric cut by the visitors as they come into the room. Listen to the video and to Beili Liu's explanation about how she feels, how she thinks we are living in a threatening environment, without always knowing what threatens us, and how doing little things, quietly, continuously, may change the world. Fantastic!

...and go to This is Colossal to watch an incredible video about Motoi Yamamoto and his salt sculptures. Yamamoto tries to capture the memories of his sister, who passed away due to brain cancer. He explains how he deals with small memories or big memories in different designs. One of the touching moment of the video shows how at the end of the exhibition, everybody comes to collect the salt and bring it back to the sea. Yamamoto says how he hopes it will be in his hands again some day to make another installation.

Yamamoto essaie de capturer les souvenirs et la mémoire de sa soeur, qui est décédée d'une tumeur au cerveau. Il explique comment il traite les petits souvenirs ou les grands souvenirs suivant les dessins. Un des moments touchants de la vidéo montre comment à la fin de l'exposition, des gens viennent récolter le sel pour le ramener à la mer. Yamamoto dit qu'il espère l'avoir de nouveau dans ses mains un jour pour une prochaine installation.
