How to make holes in quilts

To answer some technical questions by students and blog readers, I post again here a tutorial on how to make holes in a quilt. This is a technique combining precise hole making and reverse appliqué effect on the quilt surface.

Below are some "holes" related posts I've written over the years.

Pour répondre à quelques questions techniques par des élèves et des lecteurs du blog, je publie encore une fois ici un tutoriel montrant comment faire des trous dans un quilt. C'est une technique qui combine la réalisation de trous précis et l'effet appliqué inversé sur la surface du quilt.

Quilt national '17 catalogue

So glad! I've just received my Quilt National catalogue. It's sumptuous!

And it's Quilt National 20th anniversary! Since 1979, 20 463 quilts have been submitted to a jury and 1552 quilts by 798 artists have been selected!! Bravo!!

Très contente! Je viens de recevoir mon catalogue du Quilt National. Il est somptueux.

Et c''est le 20 anniversaire de Quilt National! Depuis 1979, 20 463 quilts ont été soumis à un jury et 1552 quilts par 798 artistes ont été sélectionnés!! Bravo!

Quilt National 2017

Last week-end was the opening of Quilt National in Athens, Ohio. Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but Cecile Trentini, Swiss artist present took pictures of my quilt "Trous de mémoire".

Le week-end dernier c'était le vernissage de Quilt National à Athens, Ohio. Malheureusement je n'ai pas pu y aller mais Cecile Trentini, une artiste suisse était présente et a pris des photos de mon quilt "Trous de mémoire".

Making holes in a quilt...

Two years ago I had published this tutorial on how to make clean holes for some contemporary reverse appliqué. 

Il y a deux ans, j'avais publié ce tutoriel pour faire de beaux trous en vue d'un appliqué inversé contemporain. 

Jackie Benedett, from Seattle, USA, liked the process and made her own quilt recently. Same method, but entirely different style! And the quilting is superb, something I'm not able to do, for sure!!

Jackie Benedetti, de Seattle, aux USA, a aimé le procédé et vient d'en faire un quilt personnel. Même méthode, mais style entièrement différent! Et le quilting est superbe, quelque chose dont je serais incapable, c'est certain!!

The same technique was used to incorporate afghan embroidery squares into a quilt.

La même technique a été utilisée pour incorporer des carrés brodés afghans dans un quilt.
