New quilt pattern with Uppercase fabrics

It all started with a pile of Windham fabrics from Uppercase Volume 2 collection, Dots, Dashes and Diamonds, by Janine Vangool, editor of Uppercase Magazine and designer of two, soon to be three, fabric collections at Windham's.
Janine sent me the fabrics and asked me if I would agree to make something out of them. It took some time, but the quilt is finished at last!

I selected some of the fabrics from the Volume 2 collection, leaving out the greys and the greens.
My idea was to make a block with large enough pieces to show the subtilities of the different fabrics.

The quilt block is similar to a Log Cabin block, with a little bit of patchwork before hand.
I wrote a pattern as I made the quilt. You can find the instructions Etsy here, it's less than 2 $!!

I really enjoyed making the quilt, and will start another one in the same spirit, making it more of a scrap quilt, in an attempt to diminish the large amount of fabric I have at home!!

The quilt was quilted by Chantal Baquin, from Je Quilte Pour Vous, did a lovely free motion squares design, perfect for this.

Janine's third collection with Windham, Circular Logic is just about to be released.

Log Cabin Quilt with magic Trim Tool

I wrote here about this year's Christmas gift quilt, made with a magic ruler... It was fast, it was fun!
So here's the finished quilt, using all kind of scraps of fabrics and stripes. Didn't diminish my stash much though! I have to make another one at least to see the difference!

I machine quilted the quilt with my home sewing machine, this time using special quilting needles, and it went like a dream!!

Log Cabin Quilt with Magic Tool

I've just acquired this magic Log Cabin Trim Tool and I love it. Here's how it works:
- You'll use an 1/4 inch presser foot (Bernina number 37)
- You'll need left over stripes of fabrics with at least one side straight and a minimum width of 1 1/2 inch (4-4,5 cm)
- You'll start with a 2 1/2 square of fabric.
- Make a first round around the square.

Now take the ruler and use the first square called "Round 1", in the upper right corner, and place it on your central square. Trim your block.

Ajustez votre bloc.

Add another set of stripes around your bloc and trim it this time using the second square on the ruler, named "Round 2".

Once you've completed three rounds, you can trim your block using the third square. Your blocks are ready to be sewn together!

First throw on the ground of my Very Scrappy Log Cabin. I have to hurry, the quilt has to be ready for Christmas!
I've bought my square on Amazon, as I didn't find it anywhere in Europe, but I'm sure if you live in the States, you'll find one in your quilt shop. There are different sizes and styles.

Log Cabin quilt for Christmas

Like every year, I'm making a quilt for someone in my family. This year I drew the name of a man, and decided to make a scrap Log Cabin quilt using blue green on one side, beige and grey on the other side and orange squares in the middle.
I'm making it with tons of left over stripes, using the magic tool "Log Cabin Trim Tool", making it so quick, easy and fun to make Log Cabin!! I'll show you next week how it works.

A beautiful quilt

Hexagonal Log Cabin Quilt, Jane Tucker, 1890, Maine

.
I've always loved Log Cabin quilts, but not so much Pineapple quilts, I don't really know why. But this hexagonal "pineapple" quilt really caught my eye, I love it!
It was made in 1890 in Maine, by Jane Tucker with the help of her niece, Angie.
(Collection of the Museum of Art, Philadelphia)
If you are interested in the Pineapple quilts, go to Barbara Brackman's good article on the subject. You'll see nice examples there.

Throwback Thursday, looking back at early quilts…

© Maryline Collioud-Robert, "Embrasement", 1984, 113/166 cm
When I look at that picture, I can remember the great pleasure I had to gather black and dark grey fabrics to make the quilt.
I made the Log Cabin triangles on a very fine ground fabric. It is tied and not quilted.

Log Cabin

You may know that I like Log Cabin quilts a lot (here and here), Well, there is an exhibition at IQSCM in Lincoln, Nebraska about Log Cabin quilts and their different designs. Go to the website to learn more and visit the exhibit. And look at that great little video they made, showing how the Log Cabin blocks can be assembled in different  designs.

A quilt for a man / 5

My Christmas gift to my brother in law is finished!

A quilt for a man / 4

My new philosophy says that I shall use what is in my drawers more and run to the store less!
So I looked what I had at home to make the background of my quilt, and came up with a group of yellow fabrics. They could be all right for a quilt to be hanged on a wall, but for a quilt intended to be used to keep warm while watching TV, they looked a bit drab. Therefore I went to my left over stripes drawer, and took out all the stripes I could find, in the colors of my quilt.

I sew groups of stripes, and cut them all in of the same width.

I marked the size of the quilt on the ground with scotch tape.

Then I started building the back, joining the different fabrics with groups of stripes, until it reached the correct size.

Here is a little trick. If you sew a large or heavy patchwork, always set the needle down. So if you move the quilt by accident, the needle will always stay where it must.

A quilt for a man / 3

OK, the border is finished!
Voilà, la bordure est finie!

After having sewn all stripes, I realize that some parts of the quilt are too bright or too light. I then use my magic trick, textile pens to change some fabrics!

Here, the yellow is too bright, so I'm going to add some brown and black lines to it.

Again, one of the black and white fabric I used stands out, so I tune it down by marking black lines over the patchwork.

I may do some more "coloring" when the quilt is finished!

A quilt for a man / 2

I'm not a great fan of borders for quilts, because more than often, a border can kill a quilt rather than enhance it.
But the quilt I have completed now is a bit small, and no way I'm going to make the 16 additional blocks that would be necessary for a perfect size! (Yes, I know I'm lazy, but this quilt is going to be used to keep warm while watching TV, and giving a quilt is always dangerous, because you don't know if the person will appreciate it. So let's keep the size at a convenient minimum!)
All that to tell you that this time I've decided to put a border to this Log Cabin quilt. A really-very-powerful border, let's live dangerously!!

I therefore went through all my fabrics, from cellar to ceiling, from drawers to scrap baskets to find every lined or striped fabric I had, in brown, yellow, and black and white tones.

I cut all my fabric in stripes, parallel to the lines.
See you next week, I'm starting with my border this afternoon!

A quilt for a man

I'm making a quilt for a man. Difficult to choose a pattern and colors. This man likes to work with wood, therefore it will be a Log Cabin. The colors will be rust for the center, plain yellows on one side, and a combination of geometrics or plaids in brown or black and white tones.

Twelve more blocks to go!

Encore 12 blocs à faire!

Log Cabin Pot Holder

I'm making room in my studio, and turning ancient workshop examples into pot holders. Today it's curved Log Cabin!
