How we made a wedding quilt in a day

Maryandpatch, How we made a wedding quilt in a day
I married into a large family and now comes the time where many nieces and nephews get married and have kids. It's a tradition to make a group quilt at each wedding. Last time we asked every guest in advance for a strip of fabric in warm colours. We provided the turquoise scraps.

On the D day, several adults joined the team with the goal to make the quilt in one day! We started by marking a tentative quilt size on the ground and started making long strips, alternating the warm fabrics with a narrow blue accent.

Little by little, we arranged the strips by pairs on the wall and started sewing them two by two.

After several hours, we had an interesting surface. Time to number the groups and sew them all together.

Once the quilt was completed, we went directly to basting and quilting. With many hands to baste and pin, to hold the heavy quilt and help, it was done in no time.

During the quilting phase some had prepared the binding, so the last step was about to be done.

After a late supper all together the last volunteers sewed the binding to the quilt.
Such a lovely adventure together that ended late into the night!

String Quilt, How to make it look even better, Part 2

I wrote here about how to make your string quilt look better here, using markers and paint. Now I want to show you another way...

The idea of a string quilt, and the nice part about it, is that you choose your fabrics and your color range and then you go very freely about it, sewing the stripes more or less as they come...

In making this quilt (pattern here), that's what I've done, but at the end I felt the need to alter some blocks. So I used the method I talked about here, and the one explained below...

In making this string quilt (beginning here, finished here) I just freely sewed stripes sorted by colors.

For example on this block, I think there are too many solids. I'm going to add a little bit of variety.
I choose fabrics or stripes, and matching thread.

I add a stripe on my block, aligning it on the edge of an existing stripe.

I fold the stripe, pin it and top stitch it with the corresponding thread. Once the block is included in the quilt, you don't see any difference.

You can repeat the process as often as you like or feel necessary. It' a bit like painting, very interesting to do!!

String Quilt, How to make it look even better!

I've made two string quilts lately, a Zigzag String quilt for a new pattern...

... and before that ,a string quilt for a Christmas gift (6 posts, post 1 here).

When you work on a foundation, which I love to do when making a string quilt, you can go quite spontaneously and sew quite quickly.
At the end though, you may notice a few "mistakes". That is, some fabrics are too light, or there are several solids together, or something else. You just have to know that you can "repair" that very easily.

In this example, the center fabric was way too light. I just protected the block with masking tape and drew some lines with a textile felt-tip.
All you need to do then, is to take the tapes away and iron the block to fix the paint. It really makes a différence in the end.

Here the orange was too bright. I tuned it down with brown spots. Made all the difference!!
More on the subject soon!

New Zigzag String Quilt Pattern!!

I'm so glad to present you my new pattern! I added this new Zigzag String Quilt pattern and instructions on my Etsy shop. The pattern comes in French and in English.

On the pattern you'll find several color combinations that would work great with this rectangular string quilt block. It will allow you to use all your scraps and leftover stripes to get a stunning overall zigzag effect!

Hier the main colors are blues and greens, and as accent, narrow orange/red/caramel stripes are added.

On the pattern you'll find easy to follow instructions and several color combinations to help you make your choice of fabrics.

Throwback Thursday, Looking back at early quilts

@Maryline Collioud-Robert, Dans les Jardins du Vice-Roi, 1986

This early quilt has always been a favorite of mine. I was dreaming then to go to India one day, not knowing if I could realize my dream (which I did much later!). I made several quilts with an Indian theme then.

Looking back on these pictures, I'm amazed at how many different fabrics I had already!
It took, (and still takes me) several days to sort the fabrics I want for a new quilt.
Here the quilt is made partially of stripes, combined with triangular patchwork shapes.

The quilt was slowly built on the wall...

Pinned shapes were sewn one after the other...

Before and after...

Avant et après...

I wish I had the courage then to just leave it like that, without quilting it. But I had rules in my head, and the most funny part is that nobody put them there, as I'm self taught! Strange!

Bizarre!
