Workshops with Maryline Collioud-Robert

Color inspiration workshop:

I'm giving two different "public" workshops in June. They are open to everyone and you don't need to be part of a guild or a selected group of quilting buddies to take part.
The first one is a color workshop, all information about the workshop here. It will take place on June 2-3 2018, and there's a possibility I will give it again on June 9-10 if there are a lot of people interested.
The workshop will be given in French, I can translate as I teach into German and English, but it's not as confortable for everyone, especially me!
Update, the color workshops are already full, but we are working on a third date. If interested, leave your name at the boutique. (http://patchdomino.ch)

(http://patchdomino.ch)

Zigzag String Quilt workshop:

I'll give another workshop, in French,  in Colombier (Tomorrow's Quilts) on June 15 on Zig Zag String quilt. We'll first learn about string quilts, do some color exercices to decide on how to best choose color harmonies for string quilts, then the participants will work intensively on their personal project.

If you are interested in learning this very easy technique and can't make it on June 15, there's a pattern available on Etsy here, with discussion on color and clear instructions.

String Quilt, How to make it look even better, Part 2

I wrote here about how to make your string quilt look better here, using markers and paint. Now I want to show you another way...

The idea of a string quilt, and the nice part about it, is that you choose your fabrics and your color range and then you go very freely about it, sewing the stripes more or less as they come...

In making this quilt (pattern here), that's what I've done, but at the end I felt the need to alter some blocks. So I used the method I talked about here, and the one explained below...

In making this string quilt (beginning here, finished here) I just freely sewed stripes sorted by colors.

For example on this block, I think there are too many solids. I'm going to add a little bit of variety.
I choose fabrics or stripes, and matching thread.

I add a stripe on my block, aligning it on the edge of an existing stripe.

I fold the stripe, pin it and top stitch it with the corresponding thread. Once the block is included in the quilt, you don't see any difference.

You can repeat the process as often as you like or feel necessary. It' a bit like painting, very interesting to do!!

String Quilt, How to make it look even better!

I've made two string quilts lately, a Zigzag String quilt for a new pattern...

... and before that ,a string quilt for a Christmas gift (6 posts, post 1 here).

When you work on a foundation, which I love to do when making a string quilt, you can go quite spontaneously and sew quite quickly.
At the end though, you may notice a few "mistakes". That is, some fabrics are too light, or there are several solids together, or something else. You just have to know that you can "repair" that very easily.

In this example, the center fabric was way too light. I just protected the block with masking tape and drew some lines with a textile felt-tip.
All you need to do then, is to take the tapes away and iron the block to fix the paint. It really makes a différence in the end.

Here the orange was too bright. I tuned it down with brown spots. Made all the difference!!
More on the subject soon!

New Zigzag String Quilt Pattern!!

I'm so glad to present you my new pattern! I added this new Zigzag String Quilt pattern and instructions on my Etsy shop. The pattern comes in French and in English.

On the pattern you'll find several color combinations that would work great with this rectangular string quilt block. It will allow you to use all your scraps and leftover stripes to get a stunning overall zigzag effect!

Hier the main colors are blues and greens, and as accent, narrow orange/red/caramel stripes are added.

On the pattern you'll find easy to follow instructions and several color combinations to help you make your choice of fabrics.

Appliqué with Soluvlies

Back to school! It was time to make a gym bag for my grandson's first day at school! He wanted a "vehicle", so I chose a free design on the internet. It was my first try with Soluvlies, a water-soluble stabiliser you can put behind the appliqué to make the sewing easier.

I prepared all the different pieces and I appliquéd them with the iron.

From behind, you can see the appliqué with Soluvlies, and after being washed. It requires a bit of patience, because the Soluvlies becomes gluey, and need some work to be rinsed away.

Here's the "vehicle"!

Voici le "véhicule"!

I lined the bag with a "vehicle" fabric, and made a very small secret pocket with a tiny kangaroo inside to help him jump high at gymnastics lessons!

Patchwork Quilt Workshop with Maryline Collioud-Robert

I'm teaching a workshop in French on how to use scraps in a personal and creative ways. Lots of examples and simple techniques. It is all about value and color!!

String Quilt

Relaxing and looking at the string blocks I received from my quilt guild as a birthday gift. (A tradition, you get to choose something when you reach a birthday with a zero at the end). I'll alter some and make many more, it isn't big enough!

A new quilt for Christmas / 7

The quilt was taking the last winter sun rays before being packed in a Christmas gift.

I decided to quilt the top directly on polar fleece, without batting. String quilt have a lot of seams, and therefore are quite heavy already. I quilted it with simple zigzag lines.

A new quilt for Christmas / 5

The first part of the quilt is ready, I'm pinning the remaining blocks on my wall.

I'm altering some blocks, some I leave just as they are. Again, I have to decide where is the balance between not enough and too much!

This time it should be all right, I'm going to sew the blocks to the rest of the quilt.

A new quilt for Christmas / 4

As I freely covered my foundation squares with stripes, not having a very definite idea of what I was going to make at the end, some of the blocks don't fit vey well, or they don't please me enough. Therefore I alter some of them.

For example, here, there are too many plain fabrics side by side. I'll just add a stripe, right on top of the others. I sew a stripe on the bloc, I flip it back, I fold a little bit on the opposite side and I machine stitch the stripe in place. Once the block is back in the group, you don't notice anything.

Block altered. It sometimes needs just a little something to make a difference.

I sometimes have stripes that are way too light. They give the impression there's a "hole", and it catches the eye too much. It's when I cover such stripes with more colorful ones, or when I take out my textile felt tips!

I protect the adjacent stripes with scotch tape.

And I transform this stripe, making it in a bit darker, using a textile pen and a ruler. I then take the scotch tape away and iron the block.
Now I have to be careful not to be to perfectionist and not overdo it. I could go on and on, until the quilt would be perfectly "watercolored", but I want to keep the spontaneous feeling of the quilt. It's how it was made after all!
