A lot of people ask me how I store my fabrics. I'm lucky to have a large piece of furniture, made of IKEA chests of drawers, which, unfortunately are not made anymore. I fold all my fabrics in a 30/15 cm format, and I sort them freely by color. The "plain" fabrics are separated from the prints. Here you can see the "plain" fabrics.
Pour ranger mes tissus dans mes tiroirs bien pleins, j'utilise depuis 20 ans un petit outil très simple que j'ai fabriqué dans un morceau de carton. Ce sont des poignées, recouvertes d'un côté de plastique transparent autocollant, pour le rendre glissant. L'autre côté est laissé brut, afin de garantir une certaine adhérence.
To file my fabrics in my very full drawers, I use a very simple tool I made 20 years ago in a piece of cardboard. They are handles, covered on one side by transparent adhesive plastic, to make it smooth. The other side is left so, to guaranty a certain adherence.
Je mets le tissu à ranger sur le côté rugueux d'une poignée, puis je pose dessus l'autre poignée, avec les deux côtés plastifiés à l'extérieur.
I put the fabric on the rough side of the handle, then I put the other handle on top, with both plastic sides outside.
Je glisse ainsi le tissu à sa place, puis je retire les poignées l'une après l'autre.
I insert the fabric in place, and then pull out the handles one after the other.

That is a gorgeous display. I work with fabrics in banner making so I have a lot of odd pieces and scraps. Because of this class, I am about to get them into color groups. I have just finished organizing my paper goods--on to the fabric!

Sorting and choosing and storing materials are a great part of the fun of making, whether it's fabric, beads, yarns, paints, colored pencils or other items! Handling our materials is a good way to begin an inspiration or to break artist's block.
