Sun printing on fabric, first step!

It's time to collect interesting leaves and other natural objects before winter. These will be saved and dried for sun printing next summer.

My husband made me a simple flower press, the size of a book, with two thin boards, some blotter paper and large elastic bands. I can then take it with me wherever I go, and it's so handy to press the foliage right away. Lots of fun!

Impression au soleil sur du tissu, première étape!

C'est le moment de ramasser des feuilles et autres objets naturels avant l'hiver. Ils seront sauvegardés et séchés pour faire de l'impression au soleil l'année prochaine.

Mon mari m'a confectionné un presse fleurs de la taille d'un livre, avec deux planches minces, quelques buvards et de gros élastiques. Je peux le prendre avec moi n'importe où et c'est très pratique de presser les feuillages immédiatement. On s'amuse!

Sun printing on fabric and free motion machine quilting

Every year I print some fabric with natural elements and of course with the help of the sun...

When I was young, I hesitated between studying biology or languages, (chose the latest) therefore I enjoy tremendously collecting and drying all sorts of leaves during the year. Best find this year: tomato leaves!

The plus of dried leaves: They stick better to wet fabric.

The minus of dried leaves: They fly away with the wind more easily than non dried material.

The hardest part of this activity is to find a day without wind!

Chaque année j'imprime des tissus avec des éléments naturels et bien sûr avec l'aide du soleil...

Quand j'étais jeune j'ai hésité entre étudier la biologie ou les langues, (j'ai choisi les langues) donc j'éprouve un immense plaisir à récolter tout au long de l'année toutes sortes de feuilles. La meilleure trouvaille cette année: les feuilles de tomates!

Le plus des feuillages séchés: Ils collent mieux au tissu mouillé.

Le moins des feuillages séchés: Ils s'envolent plus vite au vent que le matériel fraîchement cueilli.

La plus grande difficulté de cette activité est de trouver un jour sans vent!

Sun printing designs are ideal to practice free motion quilting. This year I made prints large enough to make pot holders. Best size to practice machine quilting!!

Les motifs d'impression au soleil sont idéals pour le quilting à main levée. Cette année j'ai fait des impressions assez grandes pour faire des maniques. Taille idéale pour s'exercer au quilting machine!!

India, Textile print workshop / 2

Following my first post on Jai Texart Print workshop, here's what we made!
First we choose some wooden blocks... hard choice...

Tout d'abord nous choisissons des blocs de bois... dur choix...




Then we try to make a drawing, or at least to think how we are going to combine the designs. 

Ensuite nous essayons de dessiner un projet, ou en tout cas de réfléchir à comment nous allons combiner les designs.




The scarves are put in mordant and dried. Then we pin them tight on the large tables.

Les écharpes sont mordancées et séchées, puis nous les épinglons serré sur les tables.

People who chose red must cook their scarf in an alizarin bath to reveal the red.

Our scarves drying after being thoroughly washed. Explanations and so many steps, not all explained here took all day! We are exhausted, but so happy! Fantastic experience!!

Nos écharpes après avoir été abondamment lavées. Les explications et de si nombreuses étapes, pas toutes expliquées ici, nous ont pris toute la journée! Nous sommes épuisées, mais si heureuses! Expérience fantastique!!

India, textile print workshop

Just back from India, I was so lucky to take part in a one day print workshop in Bagru, at Jai Texart., near Jaipur. Here are a few pictures of the business. Here, a bunch of scarves they just dried, waiting to be sorted.

De retour d'Inde, j'ai eu la chance de participer à un jour de cours d'impression dans un atelier à Bagru, chez Jai Texart, près de Jaipur. Voici quelques images de l'entreprise. Ici, un tas d'écharpes qu'ils viennent de sécher, en attente d'être triées.

It's absolutely fascinating to watch how the workers are so precise, and how they hit the wood blocks...

C'est fascinant d'observer à quel point les ouvriers sont précis et comment ils frappent les blocs de bois...

Sun printed gifts

At least once during the summer, I spend a day sun printing. See here and here. This past summer, I printed larger pieces of fabric, with the intention to make small bags out of them. I gave them as Christmas gifts.

Au moins une fois durant l'été, je passe un jour à faire de l'impression au soleil. Voir ici et ici. L'été passé, j'ai imprimé des pieces un peu plus larges dans l'intention d'en faire des petits sacs.  Je les ai offerts à Noël.

Sun printing / Impression au soleil

Last week, some friends and I spent the day sun printing. It was a marvelous day, full of sun, fun and friendship! The conditions were perfect, sun, no wind, no clouds. For some information about how to proceed with sun printing go there.

La semaine dernière, quelques amies et moi avons passé la journée à imprimer au soleil. C'était une journée merveilleuse, pleine de soleil, de fun et d'amitié! Les conditions étaient parfaites, du soleil, pas de vent, pas de nuages. Pour des instructions sur la façon de procéder pour faire de l'impression au soleil, allez là.

The good thing about spending the day with creative people, is that they bring incredible food for lunch!

Un des avantages de passer la journée avec des gens créatifs, c'est qu'ils apportent des plats incroyables pour le lunch en commun!

Collected this morning, during my walk... Will be pressed between newspapers for next time or next year.

Ramassés ce matin pendant la promenade... Seront pressés entre des journaux pour la prochaine fois ou l'année prochaine.

What a day! I was back in India, with Botto, a print and textile design studio, based in Bombay. Their fabrics are incredible! 
They also collaborated with Neeru Kumar, a very famous textile designer, working for the most famous fashion and home decoration brands in the world. Neeru Kumar revisit Indian traditional textile techniques, such as kantha or ikat, and gives them a very contemporary look. 
Visit both sites, you'll marvel!

Quelle journée! Je suis repartie en Inde, avec Botto, un atelier d'impression et de design textile, basé à Bombay. Leurs tissus sont incroyables! 
Ils ont également collaboré avec Neeru Kumar, une designer textile très connue, qui crée pour les plus célèbres marques de mode ou de décoration d'intérieur dans le monde entier. Neeru Kumar revisite les techniques textiles traditionnelles telles que le kantha ou l'ikat et les traite de façon très contemporaine. 
Promenez-vous sur les deux sites, vous serez émerveillés!

Making an Impression

Yeh! Another book has arrived. A long awaited book: Making an Impression: Designing & Creating Artful Stamps, by Geninne D. Zlatkis, an  American illustrator living in Mexico. I've been following Genine's Art Blog for years, and since she talked about writing a book on carving stamps, I've been eagerly waiting for the book to come out. And it just did, and it's already one of my favorite book this year!
Seeing the beautiful pictures, it looks so easy! There are instructions for paper and fabric printing. The book is full of projects, ideas and models in the Geninne spirit, so refined and spontaneous! I highly recommend it!

Yep! Un autre livre a rejoint ma bibliothèque! Un livre attendu depuis longtemps: Making an Impression: Designing & Creating Artful Stamps, par Geninne D. Zlatkis, une illustratrice américaine vivant au Mexique. Je suis son blog depuis des années, et depuis qu'elle a parlé d'écrire un livre sur la fabrication de tampons, j'attends avec impatience la sortie du livre. Et il vient de sortir, et c'est déjà un de mes livres préférés cette année!
En regardant les magnifiques photos, ça a l'air facile. Il y a des instructions pour l'impression sur papier et sur tissu. Le livre est plein de projets, d'idées, et de modèles dans l'esprit Geninne, si raffiné et si spontané. Je le recommande absolument!
