Sun printing on fabric and free motion machine quilting

Every year I print some fabric with natural elements and of course with the help of the sun...
When I was young, I hesitated between studying biology or languages, (chose the latest) therefore I enjoy tremendously collecting and drying all sorts of leaves during the year. Best find this year: tomato leaves!
The plus of dried leaves: They stick better to wet fabric.
The minus of dried leaves: They fly away with the wind more easily than non dried material.
The hardest part of this activity is to find a day without wind!

Sun printing designs are ideal to practice free motion quilting. This year I made prints large enough to make pot holders. Best size to practice machine quilting!!

Making Pot Holders from scraps

I made this quilt some time ago for one of my patterns, Carnaval available on Etsy.

I have some left over blocs and fabric, so I'm making some pot holders for small gifts.

I chose a white and grey fabric to bind the pot holders.

I always hide the hanging loop under the pot holder, because some people prefer using them as coasters.

More on pot holders...

Most of the time, when I give pot holders as a small gift, people don't use it as a pot holder, they either hang it or put it on a table! Therefore I've decided to make another hanging loop, a hidden one, so they can choose what they want to do with it!

Insert a "ribbon" before you finish sewing the edge.

Make a loop and insert the other end of the ribbon on the other side of the corner.

Turn the loop inside out and press.

Retournez la boucle et repassez.

How to hang a potholder

Here is how to easily make a loop to hang your potholder.

Start on one side, at the corner. Sew at pressing foot width. Stop at one pressing foot width from the end. Back stitch.

Turn the stripe to the right, folding it at a diagonal at the corner.

Bring the stripe to the left, pin and sew, stopping before the end. Repeat at the two following corners.

Before you sew the last corner, fold the stripe over, and pin it in place, just as it will be when finished.

Sew the stripe to the end and back stitch.

Pin everything in place, and sew only the "ribbon".

Slide the ribbon below the stripe.

Glisser le ruban sous la bande.

Pin everything and sew.

Log Cabin Pot Holder

I'm making room in my studio, and turning ancient workshop examples into pot holders. Today it's curved Log Cabin!
